r / worldnews – Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya issues a “people’s ultimatum” to Alexander Lukashenko: “On October 26, nationwide strikes will begin … you have 13 days”
It might be an unpopular opinion, but I don’t think the opposition has any water. They seem to want him out, which I agree with. But they seem to offer no real solution or potential candidate. They are absolutely unprepared to run the country. While the protests were initially peaceful, they now appear to be mostly composed of political extremists.
In addition, I have been to Belarus and have family there. You are generally quite free to do whatever you want. The country is basically a social democracy without the democratic part. The public health care offered is much better than my country. People in Belarus are not doing very well, and Lukashenko has certainly pulled the country out of the hole it was in after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Again, don’t get me wrong, he is definitely past his welcome time and could have accomplished everything he has done without the many human rights violations and all this dictatorial stuff. But from my point of view, it seems that the opposition wants everything in exchange for nothing, and has no real plan to implement such a reality if they win.
